The new climate divide – refocusing climate policies

At a time when many crises are happening simultaneously, issues often overshadow one another. As a result, the discourse on climate protection and climate justice is currently being eclipsed by concerns surrounding international security and the promotion of democracy. However, it is precisely in this context that we seek to shed light on what is unfolding in the background. What is the current state of the climate policy debate? Are there emerging ideas? Are new actors entering the scene—or are established actors adopting new positions?

Juniorprofessor am Institut für Politische Wissenschaft der Universität Heidelberg und Leiter der Forschungsgruppe „The new climate divide“

Junior Professor Dr. Endre Borbáth is a faculty member in Empirical-Analytical Participation Research at the Institute of Political Science, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, and a guest researcher at the Center for Civil Society Research at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. His research focuses on mass mobilization amid evolving European cleavage structures, particularly concerning climate change, immigration, and European integration. In November 2024, Dr. Borbáth's project, „The New Climate Divide“, received support from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) through the Emmy Noether Programme. His recent publications include „Environmental Protests in Europe“ (Journal of European Public Policy, 2024) and „Varieties of Trade Union Protest“ (Socio-Economic Review, 2024).
